Was This Proper Punishment for a Dog Killing?

A 21-year-old New York man was sentenced to a year in prison after he snapped the neck of his ex-girlfriend’s family dog before stuffing it behind a dryer, The Journal News reported.

He plead guilty to aggravated cruelty to animals, and according to the newspaper didn’t offer any explanation or apology in court before his sentencing. His ex-girlfriend’s dad called him a “danger” to society and spoke about the “unimaginable fear” the 13-pound Yorkie mix had in the last minutes of his life.

We want to know your thoughts on this. Was a year enough? Should he have gotten more time, less time? What should the rules be on this type of crime?

  1. Oh this makes me so sad/mad/frustrated. I know the law sees pets as a possession and not a living, breathing being that most people see as family, but a year?! That in itself is criminal.
