No Surgery!

Toby ended up not need surgery today!

Leaving the vet’s office this morning I was prepared for them to do x-rays, and depending on the results surgery on Toby’s back leg for an anterior cruciate rupture. We were about 98 percent sure the surgery was going to happen – it wasn’t looking good when I walked out of the office.

But, when I called several hours later to get the update on his condition, I was beyond shocked when they said they decided against the surgery for now.

Needless to say, I rushed over to the vet to find out the details and pick him up. My vet said after looking at the x-rays, he didn’t want to operate, but instead felt strict crate rest for two weeks – no running, jumping, playing with Kong and only out on a leash to do his business and then back in his crate – would be best.
We go back in a week for another check up. Should Toby get worse, or continue having an issue, then they will operate.

As you can see in the photo below, Toby’s ears are back to being perky, he is a little more active and actually allowed me to hold him for an extended period of time. He still prefers to be in his crate, but he’s starting to act more like himself. There is some whining, but not as much as before, and he’s still on pain meds.

Thank you everyone for all the kind comments, Facebook messages, texts, e-mails, tweets and information – because of this I’ve chatted with people from all over the world about dog health issues. It really made going through my first real “emergency” situation with Toby a little easier than it would’ve been. It was also so, so help to read about other dogs (and their human parents) who have gone through this before. Much thanks again.

  1. Yay! I'm so glad surgery could be avoided and he is feeling a little better. When our animals our sick, it feels like we are sick, too. I hope Toby continues to recover.
