Is Your Pet’s Name Trendy?

Here is Toby before he was named Toby.

Deciding what to name your pet — whether it’s a dog or a hermit crab — takes a lot of thought. We all strive for that exactly perfect name.

What you may not realize, however, is that what we name our pet says a lot about our culture, according to a new report on VetStreet.com.

Instead of simple names like Fido and Spot, we are naming our pets after movie characters, {think Bella from Twilight}, comforting names that are fun to say {think Zoey or Penny} and name we would pick for our children {think Dexter}.

The result? More evidence we are treating pets as important members of our family.

So, what exactly are the trendiest names for your cat or dog? Lola ranks number one when it comes to female cats and dogs, while Bentley is the top male pick for a dog and Dexter for a cat.

You can see the full list on VetStreet.com.

How did you decide on your pet’s name?

  1. Elka's name came after a lot of discussion and rooting around through Germanic mythology and the like. It was the name of a girl my fiance went to high school with; I'd never heard it before, and we were unlikely to encounter her again!

  2. I like the name Bentley. That's cute.

We named our dog after a character in a video game. 😛 The day before we brought her home from the shelter we wrote up a list of every name we could think of that either of us liked and then slowly eliminated them. We still hadn't made a decision by the time we'd brought her home and had it narrowed down to three: Shiva, Pepper, and Leda. Shiva stuck.
