Happy 4th of July!

While most dogs seem to hate fireworks, they don’t seem to bother Toby. He sometimes gets more freaked out by all the people and little kids trying to pet him than the loud noises.

Last night I took Toby with me to a Fourth of July celebration at the Carteret Waterfront where we met Toby’s Aunt Kelly and Uncle Roger. There was a cover band, food vendors and of course fireworks.

Toby did really good, but I couldn’t believe the number of people who came up to Toby and just started petting him. Of course Toby is usually pretty good about that stuff, but still — that’s not very smart on their part.

It was so fun to be able to be outside with friends listening to the legendary New Jersey cover band The Nerds, while also having my dog there. I wish more places were dog friendly!

If your dog isn’t like Toby and doesn’t like fireworks, don’t force them to be with you. Instead, let them chill out in a relaxing place where they feel safe. If you live in a state where it is legal to shoot them off yourself, keep your dog far away from where you are shooting them off. You never know when something can backfire.

Here’s one more Tout from during the fireworks. We even caught a little of the band playing in the background, which was a nice touch.

What do you have planned for the holiday?

  1. I have three dogs who don't mind the noise and one who is terrified. So we will be pumping up the TV volume and hoping the noise shuts off soon.
