National Black Dog Day: I Love My Black Dog

Oct. 1, is National Black Dog Day. Normally, I get annoyed at all these “National Days of Everything,” but this one is different.

Most people don’t now that there is a stigma when it comes to black dogs. For example, they are often harder to get adopted, and chosen second to lighter colored dogs. According to DogTime, it is called black dog syndrome. Their article even dives into some of the psychology behind it.

I happen to like black dogs. Well, to be fair, I love all dogs. But, I have always been very aware of the fact that many times black dogs are harder to adopt. And, maybe that is why I tend to gravitate toward them.

Maddux, of course, is a black dog. If you follow me on Instagram, you will notice that I almost always use the hashtag #blackdog or #blackdogsrule when I post about him. While I don’t know if being a black dog played into this, but I do know that in the group of dogs he was with, he was one of the only ones not adopted yet when I met him.

It’s funny, I always get stopped and asked about him. People are always commenting on his coloring. I always tell them, there are plenty of dogs at the shelter that look like him and they should look into it. Whether or not they do it, who knows.

My point is, don’t look past a dog just because of it’s coloring. Give them a chance!

Do you have a black dog? If so, tell me about them in the comments below. I would love to know more about them!
