Homemade Grain-Free Blueberry Coconut Peanut Butter Dog Treats

From the first time the company sent them to us, Toby has always loved Nutro’s crunchy mixed berry treats.

Since I’ve been on a kick of making them homemade treats in an effort to both save money and give them some alternative food sources, I decided to try making my own version of a blueberry treat. (Not to mention, keeping Maddux motivated during training by giving him a large variety of treat flavors. That dog get bored so easily!)

I really like these, because the recipe is so versitle, and you can play around with it to make it unique.

For example, I made three different shapes/types of treats from the same batter. First, I rolled it out, which I’m not good at making the better even, and cut through it with a pizza cutter to give me square and rectangle pieces. Then, I rolled it out and used a cookie cutter to make heart shaped. Finally, mostly because it was late and I was gettting tired, I rolled the batter into little balls and then flattened them in my hands.

I really like the use of coconut flour in this. Coconut is showed to be good for dogs, and works perfectly in my attempt to give them diverse types of food, as I mentioned above.

Some quick notes! This batter tended to get warm and mushy a bit fast. If this this happens, you can always add additional  coconut flour to make it less try. Depending on the shape and thickness depended on how long it took to cook. Some of the treats came crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, which is perfectly fine, as long as they are cooked through.

And, last, have fun with these and enjoy making them! Play around with different shapes and textures.

Homemade Grain-Free Blueberry Coconut Peanut Butter Dog Treats

What I used …

3 large eggs

1 banana, mashed

1/2 cup blueberries, cut in half

1 cup coconut flour (maybe a little more if needed)

1/2 cup natural peanut butter

1/3 cup chicken bone broth

What I did ….

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees, and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, gently mix together the mashed banana and cut blueberries.

Add the eggs, peanut butter and bone broth, and mix.

Gently fold in the coconut flour until combined. (If it’s too wet, add a little more coconut flour as needed.)

For cookie cutter or sliced treats, place several tablespoons of the dough between wax paper and roll out. Cut into desired shapes.

For drop treats, using your hands, roll a small amount of the dough into a ball, and then press flat to desired shape.

Put the shapes treat on the parchment paper lined baking sheet and bake for 15 to 20 minutes depending on the thickness.

Enjoy!
