What We Are Thankful for this Thanksgiving

It’s that time of year everyone takes some time to say what they are thankful, and while I feel that we should be thankful all year, and wouldn’t jump on this ‘what I’m thankful for’ bandwagon, I am going to take a few moments to do just that. Because, let’s be honest, while 2017 has been better than 2016, it still hasn’t been the greatest of years, however, there are a lot of things I am thankful for.

In no particular order, here is what I am thankful for this Thanksgiving:

My Dogs

I am not sure where I would be without them. They provide unconditional love and support. When I am having a bad day, they are there for me. When I am having a good day, they are there for me. They are the one constant in my life that never judges, yells at me or criticizes mt actions. They don’t care if I have makeup on or straight hair or curly hair; if I’m wearing yoga pants and a hoodie or a cocktail dress and heels. They are goofy and entertaining, and know exactly what I need sometimes before I know it.

My Job

It’s no secret that I am not doing my dream job at the moment, but I am still thankful for my job. Last year at this time I couldn’t find steady work, and wasn’t sure what I was going to do. It is nice to have real health benefits, a steady paycheck and be able to dabble in some new areas of publishing. My coworkers are awesome and the people at my company are pretty cool. So, I am very thankful to have that at this point in my life.

Toby

Every day I am thankful that Toby is a part of my life. I am using present tense, even though he is no longer with us, because he will always be a part of who I am. He may not be here, but there is a part of him that will always be alive in me. He taught me, and continues to teach me so much, even now. I’m thankful that he fought so hard for so long. I’m thankful that through this illness, he made me aware of comparative medicine, and introduced me to organizations and people that I otherwise would not have met if it weren’t for him.

Veterinarians & Vet Techs

Especially this year, I am thankful for caring veterinary professionals. Not just those who worked hard to keep Toby healthy, but also the ones who helped me adopt Bear. In both cases veterinarians and vet techs played a large role in helping me at various points. These people sometimes don’t get the credit they deserve for the very difficult job they do. I am grateful for them and what they do, especially those who helped me get through this past year.

You

Finally, you. I am thankful for you, our readers. Several of you have become more than readers, but also friends. Friends who really care. Friends who are supportive. Friends who I haven’t met, but feel like I have known forever. Especially when Toby was sick, your support, good vibes, comments, emails – they meant the world to me. None of my readers, at least publically, ever judged what I was writing or criticized my feelings or actions. Even if you may not have agreed with what I was doing, saying or writing, you respected that it was my decision and course of action. I cannot begin to explain how thankful I am for that, especially given this day in age when the internet gives everyone a platform to spew their thoughts, whether they hurt someone’s feelings or not.

I think I have mentioned this before. I don’t write this to get blog sponsors, hawk products or be an influencer. I just want to share stories about my dogs and connect with like-minded people. Thank you for allowing me to do that.

Hope you all have a very Happy Thanksgiving, and give your dogs an extra hug from me, Maddux and Bear!
