In general, I hate baking cookies that require you to roll out the dough, and use a cookie cutter to shape them. However, when it comes to making dog treats this way, I think it’s so much fun. Weird, I know!
The boys really enjoyed these crunchy treats, and truth be told, so did I! They were crunchy, and for people a little bland, but perfect for dogs. I actually want to try making them with some rosemary and seat salt for myself, because I may, or may not, have stolen a few and dipped them in salsa.
These are a bit tricky, because I have found they can get an air pocket while they are baking, so just make sure they are fully crispy and cooked through before serving, especially since ovens can vary.
One note about the dough, which I will include below, but still should be noted. The longer it sat out the more oat flour I had to add when I rolled it out, so make sure you have extra as you’re baking these. I’d say at least an extra 1/4 cup, because you will use it as you’re making them.
Crispy Chicken & Oat Heart-Shaped Homemade Dog Treats
by Michelle Maskaly, My Tail Hurts From Wagging So Much
1 pound ground chicken
2 cups oat flour (extra for dusting)
3 heaping teaspoons parsley
2 teaspoons honey
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
In a large bowl combine all the ingredients and mix well. Tip (!) sometimes I very lightly spray the bowl with vegetable spray before putting the ground meat in so it doesn’t stick to the sides as much.
Dust a work area with some of the oat flour and working in small sections roll out a portion of the dough and cute a cookie cutter to create your desired shape. Note (!) The longer it sat out the more oat flour I had to add when I rolled it out, so make sure you have extra as you’re baking these. I’d say at least an extra 1/4 cup, because you will use it as you’re making them. Continue until all of the dough is finished. If at any time the dough starts to get too sticky, just add more oat flour.
Place cut pieces on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet and bake for about 20-30 minutes or until cooked fully through
Remove from oven and let cook completely before storing in the refrigerator.
